Written for Day 5 of A Month of Mini Writing Challenges 2017:

Write a fable (a story with a lesson in it) in 100 words or less.

An old wives tales that my mother would say to me when I couldn’t go to sleep, “try counting sheep”.

Now that may sound a feeble reason to get to sleep and it never seemed to work as a child, maybe because I didn’t really want to go to sleep in case I missed out on something as seven o’clock was too early for bed.

I have proved it works in my old age, the mental picture of counting sheep does work, as it distracts my mind from thinking of stressful or anxious thoughts that have happened during the day, as I count those sheep jumping over the fence one after the other, as they do in real life, one jumps out, all the others will follow.

So the lesson in this tale is “try counting sheep” it may work for you.

Have you found other ways of going to sleep and staying asleep in stead of sleeping a couple of hours then being awake the rest of the night thinking of all the things you have to do in a new day?

  1. I’ve been sleeping through the night, but in those times when I awake and am thinking of what I need to do as soon as I can make noise in the house, I know that not sleeping means I’m going to have to break in the middle of the day for a nap, so I stay abed and read a bit until my eyes get tired and I go back to sleep, eventually — even if it takes a couple of hours. I can tell my body and mind that they’ve slept, and they can’t really argue with me!

  2. Haha, Elsie; I’ve never known of anyone actually counting sheep until now! Whatever works is great. As I’m writing I’m remembering one of the grandsons talking about counting sheep to get to sleep. Now I’m curious; I’ll have to ask him.
Great writing, by the way… 🙂

  3. I had a sleeping problem for years. For me, I can’t have coffee or sweet after lunch. Even when I disciplined strictly, I still had a problem. Lately, I finally found the herb with the right ingredients and the right dosage of each ingredient. I seem to go to sleep faster and stay asleep.

  4. Interesting, Elsie! I’ve found it hard to stay focused on those sheep 🙂 Exercising during the day, herbal tea with a book in bed help me. If I wake at night for long, I sometimes use it as opportunity (a call?) to pray.
